The Garfield Heights I.C.E. Learn to Skate Program

The Garfield Heights I.C.E. (Improvement, Commitment and Excellence) Program uses the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills Program.  The Basic Skills Program is designed by U.S. Figure Skating to be the best beginning ice skating program that serves the needs of both the recreational and the competitive skater.  The curriculum is designed to keep skaters enthusiastic about learning from the time they begin lessons until the time they reach their goals.  Whether their goal is to achieve Olympic fame or simply enjoy  the recreational benefits of skating, the Basic Skills Program is the place to start!

How to Register:  All participants must purchase an ID card.  A resident ID card is $5.00.  A non-resident ID card is $25.00.  All skaters must pay the $5.00 Basic Skills fee.  You will receive a Record Book with stickers to keep track of the levels you complete, a member patch, a year patch, and sports accident insurance coverage once you are registered as a Basic Skills Member.  These are one time fees.

Class fees are $24.00 for Residents punch card or 8 week class.

Class fees are $56.00 for a Non-Resident punch card or 8 week class.

The punch cards are good for 8 classes.  At Garfield Heights we welcome you to take advantage of more than one day of classes.  For example, if you are a beginner skater over 5 years of age and wish to learn to skate you would sign up for Basic 1.  You may then come on Tuesdays at 3:45-4:45pm and /or Wednesday at 6:00-7:00pm.  Whenever your class is offered you may get your card punched and skate.  We do evaluations on your first day of class.  Additional evaluations are offered every 6 weeks.

Any of the Snowplow Sam Classes and our Saturday classes are evaluated at the end of your 8 week session.

If you miss a class you may do one make up class and day your level is offered.  Please let the front desk know when you may miss and when you may make up the class.

Any questions please inquire at the front desk or see Holly.  You may also reach Holly at 216-475-7272.  You may leave a message with the office staff or press 8 to leave a message after hours.  You may also email Holly any questions at Hollysk88@aol.com.  We look forward to seeing you.

Description of Classes

First Day Information:  Skaters should check in at the front desk.  Attendance will be taken.  Instructors will be available in the lobby to help with skates.  Your child should wear thin socks as the skates should fit and be tied snuggly.  Proper attire would include sweatshirts, comfortable pants (sweat or running), gloves, and a knit hat.  No skirts or shorts are permitted without tights.  Helmets are welcomed but not mandatory.  The instructors will greet the children on the ice and escort skaters to their class area.

Evaluations: it is our philosophy that skaters should progress through the Basic Skills curriculum at their own ability rate,  We do not want to overwhelm or discourage or allow your child to become bored.  Evaluations will be done on the first day of class to ensure proper class level assignment.  Snowplow 1,2,3 classes and all classes that meet on Saturday will then be evaluated at the end of the 8 week class.  Basic classes that meet throughout the week will be evaluated every 6 weeks.  You can keep track of your skater's progress in the Record Book you receive.

Practice Time: Skaters are encouraged to attend at least one other time during the week to practice on their own and/or have a private lesson.  Skaters may use Fridays from 2:45-4:45pm for additional practice ice or public sessions.  A schedule is available in the office.  This is the only private lesson ice that may be used without having a private lesson.  Please note that any ice that is indicated as "Private Lesson Ice"  with the exception of Friday may only be used for that purpose.
